Pixar sponsored an entire re-write so that it would do what they wanted, which was logical operations for more powerful matchers. The XML format didn't have support for logical operations and adding those would have made it an unmaintainable tag mess. We agreed that using s-expressions would result in far cleaner and maintainable scripts. The format change was just a side effect.
