Did I miss anything ?

December 14th, 2007

The last 5 or 6 weeks were really something. I’ve been so busy that I could barely look at all my daily feed items and ended up throwing away everything related to generalized news about a week ago (and I end up reading mostly the titles of the ones I still have). Adding up the fact that I rarely watch TV, I’m probably missing out a lot of what’s been going on in the world, but right now I couldn’t care less. Sometimes you really have to focus on your life and that’s it.

During the next weeks I think I’ll finally have the time to really do something with Python. I’ve tried picking it up a couple times now, but I usually don’t have the time to really apply my knowledge so I end up forgetting all those nasty little things that really make the difference. That will change now, as I’m going to develop a couple of projects in Python (one web related, another one is a desktop app, but I’m still not sure about this one).

I’m also going to revamp this blog and my personal website and integrate both into only one site (and give them a new look !), which hopefully will have some more content and which I’ll try to update more often (ok, I know that won’t happen, but let me think I will).

In other news, this next weekend I’ll be attending this. Yup, that’s it. Me, attending a MS event. I hope that will show some people that I’m not that much of a zealot (at least I try not to be) and I actually have some curiosity on what they’ll talk about. I just hope the speakers are good (MSP’s only, I think).

And that’s about it for now.

Google Reader

June 8th, 2007

I decided to give another try to Google Reader. I use Bloglines, but lately I’ve heard so much about Google Reader and how much it improved that I just let myself get taken by the hype.

One thing i really like: on Bloglines, when you are viewing a folder (therefore viewing more than one feed on the same list) different feeds get separated by a title with the name and description of the feed. If you use keyboard shortcuts to go through feeds, most of the times you can’t even see those separators because it just scrolls down to the next item, and once in a while you get lost and have to scroll up a bit to so you know what you’re reading. On Google Reader you get a “from Feed Name” on each item, and the item you’re currently reading is highlighted.

The fact that things like embedded Youtube videos appear on the reader is really nice. Saves you a click and reloading that same content (and some more from the rest of the page layout).

The way tags are used in Google Reader is somehow confusing. Because tags and folders are the same thing. Therefore, it’s confusing if you have a feed on more than one folder.

So I’ll just try it for some days, weigh the pros and cons compared to Bloglines, and maybe I’ll report back on this with some more thoughts.
