New NIN single: Discipline

April 23rd, 2008

About one year after the release of Year Zero and less than 6 months after the release of Ghosts, the Nine Inch Nails have released a new single and apparently are preparing to release a new album as well. The single was first released to radios (and ETS went crazy once again) and later in the day was posted on the official website.

The single sounds like something out of With Teeth, as if it was some weird mix of The Hand That Feeds and Only (which means, dance away bitches !) and it’s really catchy. Sure it’s not oldschool NIN or Year Zero weirdish NIN but I still like it (and I have to admit that I really like With Teeth, not unlike most NIN fans).

Speculation is starting to run wild about whether Trent was holding out on his songs these last few years because he wasn’t happy with his contract with Interscope. Personally, I think he might be more willing to try out different things now (like Ghosts) than before and pick up old ideas because he can just release it if he feels like it and not have it been rejected by some stupid executives.

If people like it or not it’s a different story, but hey…it’s his own thing and from what we can understand from his flickr updates looks like he has more people working with him on his new stuff these days so a lot of the crappy stuff surely gets filtered out really soon (or at least influenced by those persons opinions).

As a hardcore NIN fan that I am, I can’t wait for this new album to be released and for another european tour. Please, don’t fuck up Trent.Effects of snorting xanax

Say what ?

March 4th, 2008

Everyone’s been saying how Trent Reznor has been going after Radiohead “offering” his album, but that’s not entirely true. Reznor had already stated his intentions of doing this a few months before Radiohead did it, and Saul Williams served as an experience for his idea:

“If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal.”

And he isn’t really offering the album as most of the “reliable” news sites are reporting. Only the first 9 songs are being really offered, but as they say:

Undoubtedly you’ll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file

As for me, I’ll be getting the $10 version (unless the shipping costs are too expensive), but I’ll only be able to do it tomorrow due to some credit card issues.

“OMG WOW WTF ?!”

April 27th, 2007

My nickname on a Year Zero site ?!

The latest chapter in the Year Zero ARG makes all NIN fans part of it. Well, at least all of those who are part of The Spiral or Echoing The Sound (and believe me, that’s a lot of people: NIN has a huge online community). I’m 24.24.2.2468 on this page. Looks like i won’t be dead or anything 15 years in the future :)

Also, some fans had their “avatars” embedded on the newly released audio files for some songs at the album website.

This is probably one of the biggest political and marketing campaigns ever made around an album (it has become way more of a political than a marketing thing), and i believe not many fan communities can brag about a band giving back so much to it’s fans: the whole ARG thing, the audio files for remixing (and the whole album is going to be released that way), free underground shows (at least one until this point) and have everyone from the two main online communities being mentioned in this whole thing, specially Darren Kroupa.

And the whole way this thing has spread around through the web, with fans collaborating on forums, setting up wiki’s, jabber bots, irc channels, will probably be (or it’s already being) the subject of many talks about the way ARG’s are being used for marketing and other purposes. I’m not sure about this, but from what i’ve read looks like this is one of the biggest and more complex ARG’s ever made.

Will this go on ? Looks like. One thing is for sure: these are great days to be a NIN fan, and it’s no wonder everyone (old and new alike) are reacting to this like 12 year old kids, going all “OMG WOW WTF ?!”.

Me included !

Open Source Resistance !

Not really Open Source software…but nice to see the expression involved in all this.

Check this and this if you don’t understand.

Another leak

February 20th, 2007

Are these guys going to leak the entire album on USB thumb drives left at their shows throughout the current tour ? Looks like it. And if it is, maybe Trent is really sending out a big f. you to the music industry. I’m also thinking what consequences it would have if they did this on the states.

NIN new song leaked

February 15th, 2007

NIN just leaked a new song here in Portugal and Spain (the information is not really accurate) on an usb thumb drive left intentionally in the bathrooms. Apparently, it’s all part of a bigger picture, an alternate reality game to promote the new album (Year Zero) built around it’s concept. Apart from the song (and the hidden image on it, found using a spectrograph), there are “future websites”, and information on the 2007 tour t-shirts (i have one of those, with the “numbers”), which led to the websites and a phone number. You can read all about it here.

And by the way, their show was great !
